Ximenia americana (Sea Lemon) (Olacaceae)

Ximenia americana (Sea Lemon)

This is quite a common shrub growing on the tropical shores of FNQ. It can be quite prickly and is rather nondescript when not in flower. The leaves are typically light green and have a crinkly appearance. However, the ripe yellow plum-like fruits are unmistakable in that seashore habitats in which this shrub occurs. The fruits are edible and have a mildly sweet and sour flavour. The bulk of the fruit however is comprised of the seed and much of the edible flesh tends to ‘stick’ to the seeds. Nevertheless, this fruit can be a refreshing snack if stranded on the strandline.

About David Tng

I am David Tng, a hedonistic botanizer who pursues plants with a fervour. I chase the opportunity to delve into various aspects of the study of plants. I have spent untold hours staring at mosses and allied plants, taking picture of pollen, culturing orchids in clean cabinets, counting tree rings, monitoring plant flowering times, etc. I am currently engrossed in the study of plant ecology (a grand excuse to see 'anything I can). Sometimes I think of myself as a shadow taxonomist, a sentimental ecologist, and a spiritual environmentalist - but at the very root of it all, a "plant whisperer"!
